I want to make some home made soap without using lye. I do get soooo confused in reading and going through all the soap recipes on line. Anyone out there that has a easy and GOOD one for me?

    What is lye?

if you were to put wood ashes in a strainer, and then pour water over it- you would have lye. its very caustic and can burn your skin.

lye is mixed with animal fats to make soap. I don't recommend doing this your self. many historical societies will have demos at fairs/ homesteading events.

There's lye in soap by definition but you don't necessarily need to handle it, instead you can use a melt-and-pour base or you can rebatch soap. Rebatching soap involves grating and melting a pure soap, adding colors, herbs, scents and other additives to make a unique soap, and then pouring the mixture into soap molds to cure. Have fun!!

Yes. That's melt and pour soap...very easy and actually very creative! I use the clear and white base I buy at Michaels (with my coupons of course) and oh, I've made such pretty soaps! I particularly love my peppermint soft green soap with a layer of clear/light green translucent soap in the middle with poppyseeds in it...it give a nice scrub every time we use it! :)
