  • Hi Bill, Both actually. You should spray the paint onto the house, and then use a roller to smooth and even it out. This is known as "backrolling." It helps to have a friend who can backroll along behind you as you run the sprayer in front of them.

Hi Bill, It all depends on the conditions. Spraying a house is much faster. Most will "backroll" while spraying. Spraying also offers a smoother finish on gutters, soffits and fascia. Do not spray if you have never received training. I always spray if i can. Keep in mind of any "over-spray". The wind and inexperience can get costly.

Look at http://Facebook.com/holdenhandymen . There is a picture of a house that was painted over 10 years ago. And still looks great. Why ? We always backroll the body/walls of our houses to make sure the paint goes on thick enough and becomes a protective part of the house and not just a thin layer for the looks.

Just had an exterior paint company come out and he specifically addressed the need to roll with thick roller the stucco portions of our home for premium coverage! We live in Denver... hot and dry climate and 300 days of sunshine :0)
