I would try inserting a toothpick to fill some of the gap and fill the rest in with wood glue that dries clear.

Turn the chair over, remove the spindles that fall out or are loose. Squeeze some wood glue into the holes. Insert the spindles back in. Take a rope and tie it around the legs. Use a pencil, butter knife, mixing spoon, etc., and twist the rope tight. Wipe off any glue that squeezes out. Let it sit overnight for glue to dry.

Do what William said, but take it a step farther. While you have the chair upside down, get some short finish nails (the kind with no heads) and chuck one into a drill in place of a bit. Drill the nail through the rung or stretcher at an angle from the underside into the leg, then pull it out and replace it with an identical nail driven in far enough to grab the chair leg. You're driving the nail from the underside so that no one will see it when the chair is upright. When you use a nail as the drill bit, it will make a pilot hole the right diameter, but not as deep as the driven nail will go so there's fresh wood for it to sink into, but it won't split the chair leg. You'll also want to be sure the chair is sitting upright on a level surface while the glue dries so it won't wobble when you're done.

this happens a lot during heating season when wooden furnitpure drys out. Repair it. Don't use the chairs or you may damage and break them.
