Any ideas for an inexpensive Mother's Day personalized mug?

I teach 26 wonderful grade 5 students. I'd like to purchase some plain coffee mugs from the Dollar Store for them. I'm looking for the easiest, non toxic and most inexpensive method to write personalized messages on the mugs. I'm funding this myself so the materials can't be too expensive. Thanks in advance. Use a regular Sharpe, let each child personalize their cup, then put them in the oven for about 30 minutes on a low setting to bake it on. Then will be good for years if hand washed.
