What is the best way to paint wood/laminate kitchen cabinets?

Thought of using chalk paint and sealing it with Varathane Floor Finish for durability. I am NOT wanting a distressed look, but a crisp, clean, new look. Would primer and latex paint be better? What are your thoughts?

Do a search on Hometalk for "painted kitchen cupboards" and you will see the many different projects posted by members and what materials they used. There are pros and cons to chalk paint, to acrylic paint, Fusion mineral paint, Milk paint, etc,, etc ... then you get into the topcoats and there are just as many to choose from.
It took me more than a year to really feel confident about the method I used on our cottage kitchen cupboards and I think it was the right choice. We return this spring and we'll see what five months away and plenty of time to cure has done to all that hard work. :)

Think about what time frame you have, how the kitchen gets used (and abused) and what will work best for you so you don't have to do things over in five years. Read, read, read. Hope that helps! :)

Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. Lightly sand the doors and cabinets to remove any gloss. Prime with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123. Then paint with your color. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.
Personally, I'm a big fan of chalk paint. It's just so easy!
Has anyone tried both chalk paint and latex paint for cabinets? Which do you feel was better? Pros and cons?
