How to use chalk paint for the first time?

I refinished a dresser that belonged to my grandmother and I found a chest of drawers at a flea market like store with deep, deep drawers. I painted them and then added poly to make the paint shiny. Now what do I need to do to paint them with chalk paint. Changing up my bedroom. Thanks

Paint them with chalk paint and put wax on them - I like the Waverly brand wax in a bottle from Walmart in the craft department. brush it on, let it dry and buff it out smooth.

That's the beauty of chalk paint. You don't have to strip the piece you're working on! Just start painting over the current finish( it may take at least three coats) letting it dry completely between coats. Once it's dry, take a light sand paper to smooth out your brush strokes and wax it. I use Minwax clear and dark from Home Depot with a lint free rag. old tshirts work great for this application! Just rub it on and buff it out and it's good to go!

      Good luck!

What a great idea to have this discussion format!! It's so instructional and inspiring! I'm in the process of moving and I have dismantled my kitchen and am planning to paint my kitchen cabinets. If I were to win the prize--I would for sure paint them with chalk paint!! Thank you for all the info on this blog. Jamie

Also, Benjamin Moore carries chalk paint in all their colors, large and small containers. This would be cheaper than a paint like, say, Annie Sloan. They will also tell you different waxes to use to make whatever look you want. Also, there are youtube experiences with chalk paint to watch - also Miss Mustard Seed will show you how.

    First project using chalk paint:

Cupboards at our cottage. Old White on top cabinets, charcoal on bottom. Waxed them . Turned out so well we did our dark ceiling beams too. Very happy with results!
