How do you make storage space in tiny bathrooms?

I have a very small bathroom just inside the front door. Because it is so small - only 41 inches wide there was not much space to store all the stuff you keep in the bathroom. I purchased two fake wood grain CD storage towers and bought a board 41 inches long and a bit of fancy wood trim. I lightly sanded the towers. board and trim then primed them and painted with semi gloss latex paint. Then I used construction adhesive to attach the trim at the front of the board. Each tower has four shelves inside so I put some dollar store containers (without the lids) inside and now have ample storage for all those small items - band aids/nail polish/extra toothpaste/combs-brushes etc. I simply placed one tower to the left of the toilet and one to the right, then added the board across the top. I live in a townhouse and there are 76 units the same. Many of my neighbors have used this idea as well. There is also a cabinet fixed to the wall to contain taller items like creams etc. It was a simple and inexpensive fix.

I had one of these bathroom in a previous home. this is certainly a creative, effective and attractive way to deal with the lack of space - GOOD JOB!

Since my bathroom was designed for someone in a wheelchair it had NO vanity or storage of any kind, no shelving, no cabinet on the wall. So.....I got several stackable plastic multi-drawer units from Big Lots on clearance sale and put them together up to counter height on either side of the sink. Spray painted the drawers so you couldn't see inside the clear plastic. Now I have a 'vanity' with loads of storage that doesn't get in the way of the grab bars, the sink, or the plumbing. I put a smallish crate that fits in that space that serves as a laundry basket. I also hung several black spray painted wire baskets on the wall on either side of the mirror to hold essentials such as mason jars filled with tums, vitamins, lotion, toothbrushes, hairbrush and comb, and one with cotton balls in the bottom and a glass flowerpot that fits inside the rim holding qtips.

Everyone says its cute, stylish, and very functional.

Those drawers I used are these, only the frame was a dark turquoise, I made them 4 drawers high for the bathroom:

I have that same little toilet room inside my master bathroom, I did the same exact thing you did but I got my over the toilet shelf from Wayfair and had to put it together! And I have a shelf with doors on it above.

    Yours looks very nice!

So creative. Looks like it was meant to be. (love the fish!) Awesome job. Thanks for sharing your great project.

When I bought those fish (made of resin) they were greyish and looked like they were made of concrete. I painted them blue and white and had them in the upstairs bathroom. I changed that bathroom to a peachy color so then I repainted the fish green/silver/white to use in the downstairs bathroom. I think everything I own has been painted at least two times. My kids used to tease me because they said "everything has to be matchy matchy." When I look at the photo now it is really bugging me that the door handles are both on the same side - never noticed that before - think I will investigate flipping one upside down.

FLOOR TO CEILING SOLUTION: I would extend the storage with this fantastic diy storage solution you have started so that it frames the window, but also gives you floor to ceiling shelving. I think there is just too much heaviness at the bottom. so I would

1)do a DIY slim console table (the depth of the current cabinets that flank the toilet), then

    2) place those two cabinets on the top and in frontish of the sides of the window then 3) put shelf above the newly positioned closed cabinets(should reach the top of window) and then

4 )put some closet maid "open"cubbies underneath the table for additional but open storage there.

What you are referring to as a window is actually a mirrored bathroom cabinet that is attached to the wall. Between this and the cabinets I added I have more than enough storage space now (there is also the cupboard under the sink and another wall mounted cabinet opposite the toilet. This is not a storage solution that I have started - it is completed.

Where did you get the CD cabinets? I love this idea!

  • Melody Melody on Mar 10, 2017

I live in Ottawa, Ontario Canada and bought them in a Canadian discount store called Giant Tiger - but it is very much like your Big Lots store.

  • Charly Charly on Mar 11, 2017

Oh my! Beautiful job! But I just remembered that when I was a child/teenager we had a Giant Tiger in our town! Unfortunately the company closed down it's stores here in northern Ohio. I don't know if there are any more left in the USA.

Would painting the two CD cabinets the same color as the walls make it "disappear" visually? May be worth a try coloring on a picture of it to see if you like it. Maybe even a shade darker than the walls...just an idea.

Winderful idea...and i agree 85) carly smith.,it would be nice also to keep the shelf over the back of the toilet and ad on each side on the wi dows side the sa.e as on the floor..but i would make a shelf that would be able to fold back like a lid..becausethe day that you will have to fixe. Theleaking or else on the toiket you ill have to undo the lid..one way or another..by putting it like a folding lid all you would have to do is to push it upwards..and that is it...

otherwise it is a super idea..

sorry for the mistakes i went too fast...

  • This is a genius idea and so well executed! Wish I had that much space on either side of the toilet, but unfortunately I don't. So happy for you! Great share, thanks!
