How do I stop floors from squeaking?

Walking around the house, certain areas of the floor squeak. Short of gutting the house, does anyone have suggestions. Thank you

Do you have a basement?
Some people have use talcum powder and forced it in between the floor boards with a cloth. This is a temporary fix and doesn't last. Since I have a finished basement, I couldn't repair from underneath. What I did was locate the squeeks Drill 1/8" holes about an inch apart angled towards each other. Then I used 6 penny finish nails and nailed the floorboards. Countersunk the nails. The angle of the nails holds the floorboards down.
