What size rain barrel should I buy?

I am considering buying a rain barrel. What size would be the norm? I live in eastern Ontario. I'm concerned that one rainfall may fill up the barrel. My intent is when it is full to attach a hose then drain it far away from the home. Thanks in advance for all your comments.

40 to 55 gallon is the norm. My community offers one free 55 gallon rain barrel to any resident. My neighbor took advantage and got one since he grows his own vegetables. It filled up so fast he ended up purchasing two more from the village at a discount. I don't grow a garden so I don't need one. I just extended my downspouts to direct the rain away from my home. Some neighbors have trenched drainage hose from their downspouts underground away from the home.
