How do I prep and paint over the veneer of my second hand chest?

I just bought a "foot locker" style chest from Habitat for Humanity. The finish on this piece is veneer and pretty beat up. I want to refinish it in glossy black to match the other pieces in my guest room. My questions are: what is the best method to prep this piece and, what type of paint is recommended to go over veneer? Thank you in advance for any help/ideas you can offer. Sandy

Lightly sand, clean, prime with Zinser or Kilz, allow to dry, then paint with any paint you desire. Once dry put a few coats of non-yellowing poly-crylic on.

Benjamin Moore makes a latex primer called FreshStart. I havent found anything it wont bond to. Good look with your project.

Sandra, You say the chest is veneer and pretty beat up. Unless you can get a smooth finish to paint, you might want to rethink the gloss finish. The glossier the paint the more imperfections beneath the paint show on the finished product. If distressed isn't the look you want maybe you could use a color from the textiles in the room and paint with a matte paint.

When I get beat up furniture, I use the embossed white wallpaper. Glue it on, paint it and then put polyurethane on it. Very durable.
