Will I be able to paint over brown stain?

I moved into a cottage where the walls are an off white but everything else was painted dark brown about 15 years ago and has been neglected since. Brown kitchen cabinets, brown shutters, brown trim, brown doors - you get the picture! The owner of the house thinks I am not able to paint over the brown stain but PLEASE tell me he is wrong!!
Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

Start by striping the cabinets with Citristrip which ia a safe-nontoxic product available at Home Depot. Providing there is no damage to the cabinets then apply a good primer as kilz or Zinser,allow to dry Paint allow to dry and seal with a few coats of non-yellowing polycrylic.
Is it painted or stained wood? If painted you can prime it and paint over it. If wood stained - sand it off, prime it and paint it or restain (no primer, if staining).
He's wrong. Many Hometalkers have painted kitchen cabinets (even over factory finish), doors, trim, furniture, etc. Prep is the key! Stripping is not necessary. Follow the painting process from Janet and Cindy!
Power to you Barbie in Brown! Like William said, with the right prep you should be able to paint away the drab brown. Good luck- I'd love to see the final result!!

They are all correct a good sealer will solve the problem I have sealed all kinds of old stained or pained surfaces and repainted them with no problem but spend the money on a good stain blocking sealer its worth it. Then have fun with the paint color of your hearts delight. good luck and also use good brushes or a sprayer it makes the job so much easier too. Teresa
Hi Barbara, Liz here from SimpleDecoratingTips.com. I've painted a lot of things in my life, both for myself and many clients. No stripping is needed... and probably no sanding, unless it's a rough surface that you want to make smooth. This bonding primer is the key to a good paint job on surfaces that ordinarily may not have good adhesion for paint. It goes on smooth and covers well, it sticks to most any surface, and is water clean up. Then once it's dry, you just paint with your favorite paint and that's it.
