What is the best way to paint oak spindles white?

We have older oak spindles or balusters that had been stained. I used a stripper and sanded and then applied a gripper paint as a primer. But it is lumpy in places when dry. What is the best way?

Stripping was not necessary. Now you will need to sand to smooth out the finish and remove any gloss, Prime with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123, then paint with your color. Use a foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.

Check the hardware store for a painting mitten. I'm not sure what it is actually called, but I used one several years ago to paint a wrought iron railing and it worked like a charm. It was a lambswool sort of applicator that slipped on and fit like a mitten, the you can wrap your (paint covered) hand right around the spindle/railing. Although as William stated above, you will have to smooth out the lumps first :( but for applying the paint, the mitten would make it very easy.
