Any ideas how to fix my Kitchen Cabinets that won't stay closed?

My kitchen cabinets don't stay closed. I am not sure if they are warped or if the hinges are somehow damaged. I don't want to put magnets on the frames unless absolutely necessary. Any ideas how to fix this? It looks so sloppy with some of the doors partly open.

My cabinets are not the kind with European hinges. Just regular hinges that are on the outside of the doors.

Check that the screws that are used in the hinges are the correct size and properly countersunk. If not take the screws out plug the screw holes with with a toothpick and screw in the correct screws that will be flush with the hinge plate.

The screws are the originals from when they were installed in 1981 when the house was built. The only ting I can think of is that they were all taken down and re-installed after painting about 10 years ago so I though maybe the doors warped. But hubby thinks its the hinges too because when we re-installed the doors they did close. Only over the last few years they've been opening. I wonder if new hinges all around would work? First I will check all the screws.

If you're handy, you can do what I did and replace your hinges with hidden hinges. See instructions here: https://homestagingbloomingtonil.wordpress.com

If you're not this adventuresome, I agree with Clive's idea. I've done that with interior doors before.

  • mine are the same way. Go to lowes and get some cabinet magnets. This is the easiest wat to fix it.

AHA, regular hinges! You can install magnetic catches(UUGH) or replace the hinges. The "spring" mechanism has just worn out over time.

Try the magnets...you're going to be surprised...i wound up changing the hinges for $70 and it looks like an entirely new kitchen...and I did the pulls too for that price. You can go to your reuse it store and get them for even less...
