What pest is digging up my buried coffee grounds?

Each week I bury in my veggie garden an accumulation of filters and spent coffee grounds from the week. There is a pest or animal that must be going around with a caffeine high because when I go back out to look the area is dug up. Any ideas what is doing this and how I can rid my garden of this pest?

Stop putting the used filters in the garden, that is what the varmits are going after, not the coffee grounds.

Its the Starbucks squirrel Can't afford the price Best way would be to spread the grounds and incorporate them into the soil. To rid them, buy a bunch of wood skewers, stick them in the ground so about 1/2" stick above the soil about 1" apart. When they try to walk around they'll get stuck by them and remember.

I'll give those skewers a try but I am still curious what it is that is running around in the night on a caffeine! high

It's either a chipmunk or a squirrel, but most likely a raccoon because chipmunks and squirrels forage during the day.

My little cairn terrier wasn't feeling well so I took her to the vet. They asked what was all that black stuff in her teeth. Coffee grounds! I learned that coffee grounds (caffeine) is slightly poisonous. She had an infection in her gums! No more egg shells or coffee grounds in the garden except where she can get at them. But I would guess a raccoon or a skunk who needs a caffeine fix.

if you live in Texas...most likely an armadillo. they root around for anything that smells like food of any kind....bet you didn't know they also carry leprosy.....black pepper or cayene mixed with the grounds will deter the culprit no matter what it is.

I'm in NC and I like your idea of cayenne.....hopefully it won't heat up the veggies going in this Summer.

It could be moles. They dig up everything.

    Didn't think of that, thanks.
