Our son and wife are beginning the reno experience with no experience. They want to remove the walls, ceilings and multi carpeted flooring in the basement. Before we start swinging sledge hammers, any advice out there?

Yes take up the Carpet and Drywall. Make sure that none of the existing walls are load bearing. When you start removing drywall and carpet watch for mold just in case there is moisture on the outside walls or floor. Good luck.

I agree with Bpjarterrier. Start from the bottom up. Carpeting should be first. You don't want it to get in the way of drywall clean up. Then the drywall, insulation, and finally the ceilings. And yes, if they plan to remove any interior walls make sure they are not load bearing!!! When putting everything together, start with the walls, then ceiling, and flooring last.

don't try and take out the carpet in 1 piece. cut it in to 2 foot sections, roll it up and then take it out to dumpster. you can also use it to squash a weed patch.

while the walls are open check and possibly up grade wiring to current code.
