DIY Wooden Doormat

This DIY was a fun way to use simple 2x2 spindles to make a durable and cool outside doormat! No special supplies needed, but I had fun experimenting with a dremel to etch little patterns along each slat.
I started by cutting all my 2x2s down to the same size. I find I get a better cut when I feel that the boards are alined and matching rather than relying on just my measurements.
The Dremel was a new toy for me (this is an affiliate link to the product so you can see what other things it does). I etched a series of lines on each board and then arranged them in alternate directions. Once they were stained... the etching showed up even more.
I used nylon cording to hold my slats together. I drilled holes in the slates, strung the cord through all the slats and made a knot between each one.
To keep the end from fraying, I melted with a handheld torch.
Here's another view of the construction... really easy. Just the cord through each board with, like I said, a knot in between to hold it all in place.
To give the mat a pop of color, I painted the ends of each board with a fun green to match the cording.
It's perfect right outside our side door. It won't blow away and it's sturdier than all my other fiber ones!

Very nice! I especially like the "playing with the Dremmel" aspect of this project. I'm thinking a wood burner would probably work well, too. So, how is your mat holding up?
