Zone 11 I think, maybe 10. I have lived in different zones. I put strawberries in the beds and sometimes a carrot or parsley border.

I planted swet potato vine around my rose bushes and the color contrast was fabulous. I love the bright green of the potato vine. Of course they are annuals, so you have to replace them each year. For me, they are worth it.

I love to plant garlic by my roses. It keeps bugs off roses and they bloom so pretty. And you can harvest the garlic for your use in kitchen.

You could plant onions as well; they help keep away moles.

If you plant garlic around your roses it will greatly enhance the scent. I had a rose which was very old and neglected with no discernable perfume and started a vegetable garden next to it. By coincidence the first row was garlic and the result was a perfumed rose!! I subsequently saw this tip on a gardening programme which confirmed my result. Happy gardening!

Perhaps some alyssum or Sweet William. Your roses look to still be rather small . Gypsophila (baby's breath) can get rather tall, and quite bushy. Something low growing would work.
