Cottage Bathroom Remodel

Our old bathroom wasn't functioning for our family of four as efficiently as we needed it to . The vanity was too short, too big for the space and literally falling apart. The shower walls were dingy and cracking, there was no exhaust fan and the grout was coming out between the floor tiles in chunks. It was time for a major remodel! We gutted the room down to the studs and built is slowly into our dream bathroom over a period of about 3 months.

We added shiplap walls made of solid birch and 3 recessed cabinets for storage.

We added shiplap walls and built in cabinets to maximize storage.

This was our original bathroom.  The boxy vanity made for a narrow walkway through the bathroom.

The shower was dark and dingy and desperately needed a ventilation fan to remove moisture.

The cabinet on the left opens into the hallway linen closet to access towels and supplies.

Sconces flanking the mirror added additional soft lighting.

A flush mount chandelier added additional lighting to the ceiling.

A new cast iron tub, subway tile to the ceiling and a recessed spot for bath supplies freshened up the showering and bath space.

More storage was added in a cabinet above the toilet.

A pedestal sink with a nice sized ledge around the perimeter freed up needed floor space which made the bathroom feel larger and easier to navigate.

Light and bright now!

Did you have to replace the sub floor before laying tile? I have cracked floor grout on both of my bathroom floors and worry that might be why the grout cracked in the first place. Also, did you have that floor vent before or did you add it? I'd be worried water would go down that vent if there was a small disaster like overflowing tub, sink or toilet.
