What to do with an old "School Desk"?

I have an old school desk - the kind with the desk and chair attached so that you "slide in" to the seat from the right. It has the space under the seat to store your "books"......... Any ideas how I can refurbish it to use instead of just having it parked in my basement?icon

Make it into a cat tower with scratching post on back of the seat and the front side of the chair back. Add soft material to make book holder under seat and top of as a bed or resting place. For the top of the desk, glue down 2 or 3 cat toys on the front edge so the cat can jump up to play. Finally add more scratching material on the top. The last touch would be to add either more scratching material or soft materi ensuring you glue the edges down to cover the cat toys.....this is if you have a cat. Don't have a cat....try rescuing a kitty from a local shelter.

I also need to paint the "book area" and cover the desk part - - I cannot get a huge stain out of the top. Probably a summer project!

What about painting it and using it as a unique decor piece in your garden? You can put some planters on the seat and desk. Maybe store a box with garden tools on the bottom?

I spray enamal painted mine fire engine red. It works in and oudoors for 20 yrs now. Kids use it when here, used it for display, as a phone stand, magazine and t.p. in bathroom, it works anywhere as a accent piece. Mostly ends up near kitchen.

I used a similar chair for years at my entry. I put house shoes on the shelf and sat there to change when I came home or left the house. added as an edit: a bonus was that the "desk" surface was an ideal place to leave papers or items I wanted to be sure to take with me or to set a package temporarily when I came back in. When I changed the way the room was used, I no longer had a space for it, so when my sister admired it, I gave it to her to use in her craft room. Her grands immediately set up a school area!

I have one that came out of a school I attended. I refinished it and use it as an end table.
