I want to take the family room (basement) back to the concrete and get rid of the carpet. what are some suggestions for concrete? Has anyone ever done the stained concrete themselves, we have no one in our area that seems to do it.

Easy job. Clean floor well first. (I would not be too concerned with little pitting issues or texture, as it is concrete and you will be sealing it which will make cleaning a breeze) Stains are readily available in most hardware stores. You will want to seal afterwards, use satin not glossy coat poly or varathane.. Also consider a pattern. I did a checkerboard/diamond block pattern using different pastel colors, turned out beatuiful and tons of compliments. Easy using a chalk line to lay your grid. I actually made my colors with oil paints and odorless paint thinner) I left every other block clear, providing a natural grey which also undertoned the color blocks. This created a natural weathered look paina rather than a color block painted look. You could do the same by first covering the entire floor with one base color tint.

Concrete staining can be absolutely beautiful, AND easy to care for once sealed. Have fun. Best of luck.
