Okay,we just moved into our new home. It is the weirdest yet ugliest
bathroom.It has floral and striped wallpaper.My husband and I bought a black and white zebra print shower curtain.So how can my daughter and I paint it black with white stripes?

If the wallpaper has no tears, rips, or coming apart at the seams, then you can paint over the wallpaper with a good primer and then your paint. I have always used Zinsser and you will want to do light coats because too much moisture will make the wallpaper loosen. Oil based primer is the best but it is not that easily washable. Then use a good paint which both Valspar and Behr are good. Use Semi gloss in the bathroom or another paint specifically for bathrooms that will deter mold and mildew. Semi gloss is good because it easy washable. In a perfect situation, I would remove the wallpaper and start with a fresh wall. Wallpaper is not that hard to remove and sometimes it can be done with hot water in a spray bottle. Vinegar removes residue. Just be careful with painting because moisture and wallpaper is not a good thing.

Okay,another dumb question.I've noticed that one corner of the wallpaper is coming loose near the floor and it is on a unpainted wall that is just drywall.Is this normall?

I would strip the wallpaper. Simply because moisture will make the paper peel eventually. Paint the walls with a paint specific to bathrooms - should have a mould inhibitor in it or buy something you can add to paint to kill and prevent mould. I would go plain white for the walls and introduce the black through your accessories. I think a zebra striped shower curtain and black and white stripes on the walls as well might be a bit much. Would probably make the room feel very small and overdone. Just my humble opinion. A black loo seat might help tie the look together (if your bathroom suite is white), along with black or black and white towels, black soap dispenser and tooth mug etc and maybe a little black in the curtain or blind could tie the look together.

I agree with Carole, that it might be a bit much. Get black towels and bathroom accessories OR if you just want to paint black stripes then paint "pin" stripes. Not too big or it will over power you room.

I too would remove the wallpaper. If the sheetrock is damaged, there is a lightweight compound that you can get to float it out. Or you can use texture paint...which I used because I did not want sanding dust! Instead of black and white stripes then, you could do the top half in white and the bottom half in black with a white chair rail.

I recently painted over wallpaper with no issue. Primer , then paint but it was not pealing off. Good Luck .

Are you sure you want a black and white striped wall with a zebra print shower curtain? That's a lot of bold pattern going on in a small area. Or, if you do stripes, make them very small. Maybe look for a wallpaper that's striped. Painting any stripes, but especially small ones would drive you nuts.

Yipes stripes! Top to bottom & on every wall? If you don't like it now - you won't like it in Black & White, either. I agree with the other comments - strip the paper off. Once you see the walls plain, then you can think more clearly about what you can do to them. Personally, I think too many patterns in the same colors, would clash or make me dizzy -- LOL Best of luck, can't wait to see the results of your final decision.

From someone who has remolded several houses and have taken wallpaper off five bathrooms. Take the wallpaper off, you will be glad you did later. Then you can paint the walls any color you want (pink, green, blue, etc.) with the black/white shower curtain. One idea is to get a color you like then get a quart of white and tint it with some of the other color to make a lighter color. Paint the wall with the two colors using a small stripe and then a larger one.

You may run into problems removing the wallpaper if the walls were not painted before installing the paper. It will remove the paper on the drywall and you will need to skimcoat the drywall before painting. It will be a big mess, but in the long run, it's probably the way to go.

I would, in fact I DID, strip the wallpaper. Not fun, but I agree with Cyndi... you will be glad you did. I was so tempted to paint over the wallpaper in a master bath, but it was coming loose in too many places, I knew it wouldn't work. The paper will have to be removed someday...if you can do it now, do it now...I had a bathroom that people kept going over the last and when I redid the room I had to take off three, count them, three layers of wall covering and a wicked skim coat! It will haunt somebody, someday...the right thing to do is to removed the paper and start fresh. Good luck with your bathroom, sounds like it will be great!

Using two shades of the color you choose - on the solid wall will break it up - and give you more options on your decoration. If your room is small the lighter shade could also go on the solid wall and the dark on the remaining three wall. Just some food for thought.

If you are looking to do this quick and on the cheap, you could try to paint over it as long as there is no "peeling" currently happening. prime first. You will see the line from the border but could put a thin trim around the room at the line if it bothers you. I probably wouldn't do the stripes though.

I, too, have painted over wall paper successfully but the wall paper needs to be on good and not peeling anywhere for it to work well. If you want to remove the paper use a spray bottle with vinegar and water. You will need a putty scraper but it worked like a charm for me when I removed the border in my kitchen recently.

It is much safer to paint over wallpaper that is on the wall correctly than remove it. Removing border is entirely simple compared to a whole wall. Just use a good oil based primer after wiping down with acetone and cover with 2 coats of good latex semi gloss or satin paint. We love our bathroom after painting over 80S wallpaper.
