You septic tank system relies on bacteria to keep it healthy so you want to avoid using anti-bacterial products, especially hand cleansers. A good rule is to use everything in moderation and try to stick to the same brands of chemicals, as the septic tank bacteria will become partially immune to them over time.

    Best of luck!

Margaret, specifically, too much bleach is bad as it kills the bacteria. It is helpful to use homemade or "green" cleaning products (vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda) as much as you can. In addition, there are additives you can purchase cheaply for your septic system) which create more bacteria in your system. They come in a box of 6 or 8 packages and you just empty the package in the toilet once a week. I use these at my cottage and they help to keep the system clean. Good luck!

Thank you Laurie, I heard Mrs. Myers products are good to use, is this true?

Margarety, sorry I am in Toronto, Canada, so haven't heard of Mrs. Myers cleaning products. You could check the content labels for natural ingredients. Laurie
