Help! I have a set of dark wood barn door window coverings that I would like to lighten and make look light weathered barn doors. How do I do that? Is sanding them down the only way to start?

For a little less work you can white wash them.

Hi Debbi- You don't need to sand them and start over. Depending on how light you want them to be, you can either dry brush them with a grayish-white color, leaving the brown wood to show through. Or, you could paint them gray, then age them with some darker glaze or wax. Do you have a photo of them?

I would go with chalk paint for a matte finish. Go to Michaels or Joanns and grab a little pot of Americana chalk paint- with a coupon it will cost around $4. Should be enough to do both shutters. Make sure you post a photo when you are done!

    You can pickle the wood!
