If you are like me, you love the look of weathered wood trays, but you don't love their price tags in stores and online. For me, when I want something that I don't want to spend a ton of money on, I try and figure out a way to get the same look for a lot less money. This DIY Weathered Wood Tiered Tray is my latest hack project.

I found this tiered tray at my local thrift store. Tiered trays are so much fun because you can use them for tablescapes, decor and functional pieces in your home. I didn't like the dark brown finish on this particular tray so I gave it my DIY weathered wood look with paint.

I start with a beige/greige paint. I didn't have any on hand this time so I just mixed a brown paint with white to get a taupe color. I painted the entire tray in this color first.

When the first layer of paint dried, I dry-brushed gray paint on the tray. I don't fully cover the tray with this color. I just put a little paint on the brush and put it sporadically on the tray.

Next, I did the same dry-brushed/sporadic technique with {affilink} white paint once the gray paint dried.

When the white paint dried, I rubbed {afflink} antique wax all over the tray. The antique wax really brings the weathered wood look come together.

This project took less than 30 minutes to complete. The longest part of it was waiting for paint to dry between layers, but I set a fan up on my work station to help it dry faster. icon Impatient DIYer??? I have been told that a time or two.
