Sink a bowl or plate level with the ground. Pour some beer in the bowl. The yeast attracts the slugs. They drink their fill and die.
Diatomaceous earth is very good and will not harm animals or children. I have also used corn meal sprinkled on the ground with good results.
If you use the beer in a bowl make sure that Puppy can not get at it. Puppy may drink it or splash it out of the bowl. When I have used the beer in a bowl I used a glass pie pan and filled the pie pan about 1/4 full. I set the pan out where I had seen dry slime trails so I know that the slugs would find it. I only had to put out the beer for 3 nights.
You might try a protected container (jar on its side with bottom slightly higher than opening) with dry cornmeal in it. Attractive to slugs and nontoxic and not for fur babies. Never liked emptying slug beer anyway.
Look for wildlife friendly slug bait like Sluggo. Make sure the only ingredient is iron phosphate. The slugs eat it and then go away and slowly die so you won't see a lot of dead slugs like you do with the toxic stuff
we had attacks on our gardenia's but it was our fault because we pulled the mulch up against the bushes and they climbed up on them that way, once I pulled the mulch back the problem went away. salt works great when you have issues in other places and so does copper it causes an electric charge. for the garden put down some sand or shards of pottery or tar shingles. the can handle the sand like texture from them.
