Can I use Modpodge over Zinnser-primed vinyl?

I would like to use fabric to cover my kitchen walls...the walls that have the original 1980 contact paper print of sad little berries and leaves! It was applied straight over the drywall, so there is no getting it off. Long-term solution is to put up a good beadboard. Short-term, DIY is to get inexpensive, colorful fabric and Mod-podge it over the vinyl, followed up with a coat or two of polyurethane. I've looked at the projects and am confident I can do this. HOWEVER...the prints I like have a white background. I'm pretty sure the old berries-and-leaves will show through.

My question: can I Zinnser-prime the contact paper to white out the contact paper's pattern, but still use Mod Podge over it? Will the Mod Podge disagree with the primer, or vice versa? I have not used the two together, especially over a somewhat slick, non-porous surface. Thanks.

Have you actually computed the fabric cost to say nothing of the cost of Mod Podge, primer, sealer, etc. and your time and effort? All the fabric I've found in Central Texas, is at least $4.00 a yard for 45" (Waverly fabric at Walmart is $3.97 unless it's gone up in the last 3-4 months) and 45" fabric at Hobby Lobby is about $10 a yard, but is usually 30% off, but that's still going to be expensive for what you probably need. Maybe you'd be better off saving up for the bead board. There have been some featured walls on hometalk utilizing wooden slats or even pallets. You might use the Search feature to find these. Sorry to be such a pessimist about the project. Good luck, whatever you choose to do.

Those are good points. One thing, though, is that I only have one full wall. Windows, doors, and cabinets take up most of the other three walls (an architect did *not* do the layout, lolz) and I'm going to do something different for two of those which are behind the stove and the sink -- will do backsplash stuff. But you're right about things being more expensive than I had anticipated

I have breadboard that's tongue and grooved, stained and poly...I put it up over storm damaged wallpaper that I loved but could not find to repair. I just made sure it was totally dry and mold free before I did it. However, my daughter used stark white prefinished panels in her kitchen dining room and I LOVE it! $30 per 4x8 sheet! You won't find just the fabric for that...

I think I've decided to do fabric on the walls as the permanent solution -- to just go ahead and invest in the fabric, since that will give me the color and floral look I want anyway. The fabric, modpodge, and polyurethane together will be right at $120 (small kitchen), and I already have a ton of Zinnser from other projects. It'll be a couple of months but I'll post pictures.

Cparisi76, it's nice to know that the prefinished panels work out so well! Thanks!

Sometimes when we have our mind set on something, nothing else will do and it is worth it if it makes us happy. $120 is not much expense for getting exactly what you want. Looking forward to seeing the pictures.
