My last pool had a few nice dwarf trees and perennial bushes, some dwarf pines. Thus the pool scape looked good all year and little maintenance. (Okay and a few dwarf azeleas for pool opening flowers.)

We planted Hosta all the way around our 27' above ground pool and it looks beautiful! It reminds me of a beautiful necklace. And the best part is when it's time to break up the Hosta, you have lots of plants to go in other spots, give them away or sell them. They love the water from the pool and they get sun and shade.

Can Hostake take the hot sun?

Will they come back after the cold winter?

Absolutely. I live in northern Ohio and they make it through our winters and they're just beautiful all over again. The only thing we do is cut them down to the ground in the fall.

Usually when you looking for low maintenance most gardeners will say plant native plants, once they get established then you don't need to do much to them.

It depends on how high of a plant you want. Coneflowers like the sun, they can get tall though. You probably don't want plants that attract bees especially if you are talking about a swimming pool. Ornamental grasses are good, you can varieties in different heights and colors. The only thing you really have to do with grasses is each spring cut them down a bit. Iris and they will spread each year, a type of Mum that spreads its basically a groundcover. But you would have to wait until fall to buy. Once they start growing all you need to do is water them once in awhile. Be careful on Hosta because all of them like the sun but there is a good variety to pick from.
