I started by changing light fixtures. Turn off the electricity, disconnect and reconnect it was simple. Soon I was using power tools to add moulding - next came cutting open a wall cavity to insert shelves. Just take things slow and be careful and precise!!

Research here on Hometalk and save what interests you. Check out Christopher Lowell on Pinterest. He has thousands of ideas. He used to have a show on HGTV and I learned so much from that show. Sometimes he could be a little over the top in decorating but his "how to" was priceless. His show inspired me to DIY. And again, save what you like.

  • if you have a particular interest, you can buy "starter" kits of some things, like making soap or candles, or painting or take an adult school class, usually a one-nighter to try small household repairs. Watch some how to videos here on Hometalk or on YouTube

My DIYing started from a need, I needed to have some privacy. I couldn't afford curtains and had two windows that anyone could see right in . I made roman shades from some wood, two old long skirts from a thrift store and shoe laces! After that I was hooked and just jumped in to all kinds of DIY. I make stools and tables, many things from scrap wood, paintings on canvas to murals on a wall, glass window art, etc...I have done most of the things you see on this site, some things I'm better at and some things I'm not but it doesn't stop me from trying new types of DIY stuff. Right now I'm working on a hanging lamp, cardboard, beads and wielding involved in this project. I will post it on here when I'm done. Recycling something in to something else would be a good start!

Whatever you do I hope you enjoy the experience of creating!
