      Thanks, Janet. Will research your suggestions. We are just so disappointed that our pine trees perished ESP after all the loving care we gave them. I have to make sure we get deer resistant shrubs as well as hearty....I'm having a hard time dealing with the emptiness in the landscaping.

    I would talk to a good nurseryman and he will guide you in the right direction. Pine trees should do well in your area if you bought pine trees hardy for your zone. I have clay soil and in the 12 yrs I have been here I have planted maples, oaks and a weeping cherry tree and several red buds, they are all thriving and are now good shade trees. Sometimes people plant the trees too deep, could that have been the problem with your trees, also the first year they are in the ground they need plenty of water, even in the fall if there isn't regular rain fall.
