Get That Perfect Pottery Barn Black Paint Look

We had a cabinet in our family room for so many years, which we loved, but then we painted our walls grey. I took a leap and decided to paint it black. I did my own thing, as I usually do; and I'm happy to say that after a number of years, it looks as great as it did as the day I painted it. No chipping at all!

This is the cabinet we had for years. It really doesn't matter what piece of furniture you want to paint, because the technique I used will work for you.

I probably would have left it alone, but after we painted the walls grey, the neutral color just didn't look right. That's when I decided we had to go with grey.

This was made of heavy, solid wood and was all one piece. So moving it was hard enough to just pull it out enough from the walls. We started by taping sheets of plastic to the walls and windows. We also put blocks of wood under all four corners and making sure everything was well protected and covered. Just one little splash in the wrong place could be disastrous.

I know it may not look like it, but the natural piece of furniture had some kind of protective coating over it. I probably should have sanded it, but to be honest, I did NOT sand it. Instead I did some research and decided to use Glidden Gripper primer over everywhere where I was going to paint. I chose grey only because I was using a dark black over the top of it and I knew it would be better than pure white.

I finally settled on Rust-oleum Satin in black. I wanted an oil-based paint because I knew it would be more durable and hold up better. Finding oil-based paint isn't easy today, but thankfully I found this at Home Depot. I used a combination of brushes and rollers for priming and painting. You can see more details here.

It's hard to see, but the bookshelf tracks couldn't be removed. So I just carefully painted around them. The items on the shelving we moved around and dusted and used over the years, and we never ended up with any scratches or nicks.

And to top this all off, I left it as is without putting a protect coating over the paint! I loved the look of the cabinet after all the paint dried and it, seriously, looked just like the black painted furniture you see at Pottery Barn. I have more details on my blog if you would like to see more about this project.
