its not cold-it's been in the 70's but the plant is old & well established-I should fertilize it (we had a lawn service last year for plants & shrubs but only grass now -too much $ ) should I cut it down to 1/3 of its size? It 1/2 it's size? And what kind of fertilizer should I use? It was my mothers bush and she passes a few years ago and I really don't want to loose it thank you

You don't say where in Florida you live. Check out what the University of Florida has to say about their care: http://solutionsforyourlife.ufl.edu/hot_topic...> Another site that may prove useful: http://ameliaislandliving.com/fernandinabeach/2011/12/poinsettias-can-be-outdoor-landscape-plants-in-florida/

Try typing "poinsetta pruning florida" in Google search. I just tried it and it brought up UFL first, then any number of other sites. You should be able to find what you're looking for.

As soon as winter season is over. Then, put it in a paper bag, trimmed, and staple it shut. This will be fine, til the fall of the next winter. It will do fine, espec. in the dark area. This may sound crazy, but it works.

I live in the Caribbean. We have a rule here...prune twice a year. First time during March and second time during October. WE always have wonderful bracs at Christmas!! We are tropical however...!!

If you look at the bush, you will see the original branches etc...I never cut that far down. Did once and it died. So now I just try to control the size and realize that new growth will come from the "nodes" which is where there was a tiny branch or a leaf. When rootin a cuting of any kind...it is from the nodes that the roots spring and above the soil...the branches and leaves. Good luck!!

PS...there is a rule of thumb when cutting back...cut one....get two (branches) Always keep that in mind so you do not end up with to skinny or to crowded a bush.
