For those red cabinets and the dark counter, I would go with the white subway tiles but maybe use a color grout to make them pop a bit

  • William William on Mar 20, 2017

I agree with the subway tiles. The recycled wood just wouldn't look right with the red cabinets and countertop.

  • Shirley King Shirley King on Mar 20, 2017

I agree . White subway tiles with gray grout.

  • B.I.Green B.I.Green on Mar 21, 2017

My vote is the subway tiles, too, but I prefer the white grout.

The subway tile will kept it light where you need to work and it's neater looking.

  • Mary Mary on Mar 21, 2017

Although I love the pallet wood backsplash, I think for this application, as everyone so far has agreed, the white tile would be better. Have fun! :)

  • Debbie Debbie on Mar 21, 2017

    Go White!

  • The white subway tiles ☺

  • Springermom Springermom on Mar 21, 2017

I like them both, but I think the white tile would be easier to keep clean; wood would absorb grease and stains in a kitchen. Maybe use the wood for an accent wall somewhere nearby.

  • Ajantha Cakes Ajantha Cakes on Mar 21, 2017

I like white tiles. It is easy to clean.

  • Susan Susan on Mar 22, 2017

The interest in your kitchen is the contrast between the red and dark grey. White is best, maybe with grey grout. Wood would be too much. Hope this helps.

  • Charlee Hunter Charlee Hunter on Mar 22, 2017

I'm on board as well with the subway tile..love the clean look and the fun you could have with the grout color.

  • Deborah Anthony Deborah Anthony on Mar 22, 2017

I prefer the wood one, love wood in the home...

  • Connie Connie on Mar 22, 2017

I like the white subway tiles. The wood looks like it would be hard to keep clean.

  • BabyBoomerSC BabyBoomerSC on Mar 22, 2017

Definitely #1. The subway tiles are the way to go.

  • Liz Liz on Mar 22, 2017

Leah, please tell us how you got that gorgeous red finish on your cabinets? I love, love, love it!! I agree with white tile and grout to match your counter tops.

Thanks! The cabinet doors were taken off and spray painted at an auto body shop!

  • Michelle Michelle on Mar 22, 2017

What about a pretty pattern wallpaper wth something over to protect or would look great wth tin backsplash

  • Rosalee Maxwell Lyons Rosalee Maxwell Lyons on Mar 23, 2017

I think the wood would look very different. The white is elegant, classic and clean. What look are you going for?

  • I'm a wood girl. #2 gets my vote.

  • Keith Widgington Keith Widgington on Mar 23, 2017

I think the subway tiles with the red cabinets. some sort of darker grout could possibly be used to accentuate things.

  • Bonnie Bowness Bonnie Bowness on Mar 23, 2017

Hi Hon! I love the white subway tiles. If this place were mine I would pick a tin back splash.I think it would be stunning but it all depends on the look you are going for. Both your choices are beautiful. What ever you choose will be beautiful, because it already is and your not even finished. All the best!CHEERS!!!!!

Do you cook? If you do actually use your kitchen for cooking (some people eat out a LOT), then use the ceramic tile. The stone work looks great, but is a pig to keep clean. After a while cooking grease gets in the air and on the surface of the stone and that makes it a magnet for dust and other dirt.

Taking into account the sheen on the modern looking cabinets and the color. I would highly suggest the subway tiles with a colored grout. Had it been a red mid-century style cabinet, I would have gone with a checkerboard in black and white or white hexagon. The wood is a contrast of styles it feels 'country'. You might be eclectic and that would suit, but if you want to take resale into consideration, I would stick with the subway with black grout.

Keeping it clean is my first thought for a back splash. When we redo our kitchen (soon) I'm going with a solid surface back splash. My second choice would be the subway tiles.

The best look is the red subway tile, and white grout, will check back to see

    which one you choose.

  • Skooter Skooter on Mar 23, 2017

I like the subway tiles, but if it isn't too pricey white marble subway tiles with gray veining would be beautiful

  • Lynda Dexter Lynda Dexter on Mar 24, 2017

I say the wood looks better but agree the white would look better with the red so my vote is to go with the wood but white wash it or even just whit paint. I love love love the texture of the wood.

  • Tracey Tranmer Smith Tracey Tranmer Smith on Mar 24, 2017

Like both options but I would be concerned about cleaning the wood in the kitchen or water splashing on it to make water stains so I would go for the tile.

  • Lea Swenson Lea Swenson on Mar 24, 2017

White subway tiles are clean and easily cleanable as well as timeless. Go with a beveled tile though. They are beautiful when installed.

  • Maria H Maria H on Mar 24, 2017

For me, the white subway tile wins hands down - especially, when you use a grey grout with it. It will look lively, but not overpowering (as the structured wood backsplash would), and will unify your color scheme. AND it's sanitary.

  • Marilyn Marilyn on Mar 25, 2017

    White subway tiles for sure!

  • Linda Dugas Linda Dugas on Mar 25, 2017

Of the two back splashes I like the pallet one the best. it is likely more work, but gives a more homey touch then the sanitary all white background of the first tile back splash..Not that I don't like white...but too much white for me is too much...just saying my opinion.

  • Kathy Steinhaus-Sammons Kathy Steinhaus-Sammons on Mar 25, 2017

    White subway tiles for sure!

  • Well I like the #2 option as it creates interest and texture, I vote for option #1 as in my house I cook every single day and have 6 cats and 6 dogs (need I say more?), and would be easier to keep clean. If that is not a concern, I love the #2 option. Both great in my opinion! ☺ can't wait to see what the final tally will be!

  • Jennifer Jennifer on Mar 25, 2017

I like both but I will have to go with the white subway tiles because of the red cabinets and dark counter.

  • Linda Sikut Linda Sikut on Mar 25, 2017

Like the majority, I thing the subway tiles would go better in your kitchen, but I also like the idea of a colored grout. Are you looking for something you will enjoy more or making sure it has a better resale value? If it's for you, pick whichever one you like, but if to keep a higher resale value, I'd vote for gray grout. If someone looks at your house when you're ready to sell, they might not like the red cabinets. If they like everything else, they would probably decide they could paint them, but if the grout is red it would be a lot more work for them and could kill the sale. Just my opinion.

    subway tiles, easy to clean.
