What stain/paint do you use on bamboo (used outdoors) ?

I have several 10-ft bamboo poles in a deep terracota container that I place by my front door. The area gets a lot of sun. Original stain has faded and some poles have split. I'd like to restore the natural bamboo look. Please help.

Bamboo does not accept stain easily. Use a gel stain that will dry on the surface. Then seal with an exterior polyurethane, varnish, or shellac.
