I would like to plant perenials similar to hostas, but I want a plant that does not attract deer and other Michigan natives. Any suggestions?

Try Heuchera that comes in a large variety of color.

Ferns as well and bleeding hearts and asstibils. You really want to speak to someone in a nursery. Hostas come in so many varieties and the leaves with different shapes and colors and sizes that unless you already have a variety of them I would think about adding more just different ones.

I love bulbs as perennials. Iris is especially colorful. There are bulbs for all seasons. And you live in the bulb capital of the US. I believe the company is Michigan Bulb. Check with your local gardening center (not a big box store) on the best deer deterrents.

Trillium and Jack in the Pulpit are great bulbs and native to Michigan. Peonies are wonderful and easy to grow, too. Just use a support ring. I don't know if deer like them, though. Lily of the Valley is a great ground cover, but can be invasive.
