I have an antique bookshelf and it has about 5 coats painted on it. I am changing the color completely from Green to Barnwood Red, but it is taking forever to sand it off what else can I do?

    Use Citristrip paint stripper.

Try using the gel in the bottle rather than the spray.

Get a heat gun and try that first before the strippers. Then you use a scraper blade specific to furniture stripping. The kind you sharpen with a file.

is it paint or varnish? The strippers are different.

Try using furniture paint from Lowes Hardware! No stripping or sanding needed. Just paint. Also chalk paint can be used with no sanding......

I hate the mess of strippers and have had great success using a heat gun and scraper. Just make sure to wear a mask if you aren't sure what type of paint is on the piece.

If you can get it sanded to where it is a smooth finish you can use fusion mineral paint. It has no VOC's has a built in sealer and dries to touch in 1 hour. To do it right though give it 12 hours between coats. With in 21 days it's on rock solid and will not scratch or scuff. Won't use anything else

If you are sanding use 120 grit paper. A furniture finisher told me that is the best and I have good results using a circlur sander too.

I am using a60/80grit electric hand sander an it is coming off better than with the stripper, I usually use a palm sander but it is aloy of layers lol but thank you!😊

Go to Fusion mineral pain.com and they will tell you a supplier in your area, it's also available at Amazon but it a little more expensive than what I pay at my supplier. The website also has tutorials which are great.

1st - I hope you are wearing a good mask. (looking at the pics and seeing the word antique, my first concern is lead) Use a heat gun for the bulk of the removal, then stripper for clean up. Citristrip works slow have patience, very slow on lead. For faster results use the nasty/bad for the world strippers like marine strip. The heat gun/stripper method minimizes the lead hazard.
