Affix ceiling-grade gypsum board, which weighs significantly less than standard wall board, right over the existing popcorn ceiling. You'll need to securely screw it into the framing and be proficient at mudding and taping for a seamless job. Good luck!

  • Hi Elizabeth! Liz here from SimpleDecoratingTips.com There are many choices for you with your popcorn ceiling. You could just scrape it off and re-texture it, or do a completely different treatment.

  • If you don't want to do the scrape off routine, an option depending on your decorating taste, or style: ceiling tin, you can frame the ceiling with 1"x1' wood and then attach the tiles to the frame, the tiles can be painted in different variations to match what is desired. Sand the ceiling to a smooth consistency and hang anaglypta (not sure of spelling) wall paper, the patterns are raised relief and you can do different panting techniques on it as well. Wood, whether it's leftover flooring, or wood slats, you can go high gloss contemporary, or use distressed, or barn wood for a more country style. Hope this helps, I'm just a DIY'er like everyone else.
