Dripping sound in wall

When turning on water in upstairs baths I can hear a dripping sound in wall but do not see any wet spots anywhere. Short of taking down walls to find the cause of this drip, what can I do?

You will need to cut an inspection hole in the wall or ceiling to find what is causing the leak. Use a flashlight and a small mirror to look around inside the wall/ceiling.

Use a stethiscope or a glass on the wall to determine the exact spot of the water dripping, so you only have to open the wall where it's necessary.

occasionally a thermal scanner will show where the water is behind the walls. water is generlly cooler than the walls. worked on my 1st 50's build. wound up making an access panel to the pipes.

There's a device called a moisture meter that might be able to help you pinpoint the location of the drip. Good luck!

You are really only interested in the pipe that is leaking- cut your inspection hole there. Holes will have to be cut to make repair in any case. Repairing dry wall is more messy than tricky. I have have bad glue joints and screws in pipes. What was changed prior to the dripping and go from there.

Take the whole panel down, it is actually easier that cutting and repairing drywall. If there is trim( molding) carefully take that down first. We had a funky urine smell in a house after tenants moved. The soil pipe ( 4" sewer pipe) from the upstairs toilet was in the wall near the smell. My son took the paneling down, the plumber replaced the leaking cast pipe and I replaced the paneling. There are colored nails that blend with the panel color.
