I'm getting bubbles in my polyurethane finishing on furniture

I'm using Minwax oil based satin poly, a Purdy "for oil" brush, I stir slowly, and brush on slowly. TONS of bubbles. Watched Youtube video on this so I even diluted the poly at 3:1 with mineral spirits and soaked the brush in mineral spirits (to remove the air, which he said caused the bubbles). After all this, still getting the small bubbles. I let dry for a few minutes and then lightly stroke brush over finish to remove some of the bubbles, just can't get them all out. HELP..................

Are your shaking the can beforehand? If so that could be part of the problem. Cans of polyurethane should be stirred by hand. Also I'd suggest using a roller instead of a brush. Good luck!!

No shaking EVER with poly, just stain and paint. The fellow at Lowe's said I could have a "bad can/batch" and allowed me to swap the poly. For the final coat on the cedar chest I made, I mixed up at 3:1 some of the poly and mineral spirits and actually applied by hand. A whole lot less bubbles and most "popped" after a few minutes. Maybe it was the thinned down consistency that helped with that. Thanks for your reply..................

Are you moving the brush in only one direction. Thar is how I was taught.

Let's try the word "that" instead of thar

I haven't been but I WILL try that on my next project. Thanks for the suggestion. I look forward to seeing if that will make a difference. I'm getting to the point I'd rather design & build a project than finish it. Thanks again.........

Never shake the can. Use a foam brush or roller to apply the polyurethane. OR, lightly sand and use wipe on poly. I appreciate the ease of the wipe on satin finish and have been happy with the results. Good luck with your project.

I actually saw a video on Youtube where a guy took the Minwax satin poly and mixed it 3:1 with Mineral spirits to make a wipe on poly. I used this on the final coat that I put on the cherry cedar chest that I made. Not perfect, but a lot easier and better finish than me brushing on the satin out of the can. Thanks for the recommendation on the wipe on, as I'll give it a try on my next few projects.

That happened t o us when we did a coffee table, those bubble are called "fish eyes". When searching for what caused it, I learned that the silicon in spray polish is the culprit, and we had sanded first.

I've never heard that term, but I can see the similarity. My project was built from scratch with 10 yr old cherry, that I planed to build the chest. I believe that I'll try the wipe on poly mixture of 3 parts poly and 1 part mineral spirits on my next few projects, like I put on this one for the final coat. Much better........... thanks for your reply.............
