  • Flooring stores have unadvertised sales on end lots, left over or discontinued items. If you are only doing a bedroom I am sure you can find a deal. Takes a bit of time and legwork, but a day shopping all the stores in your area will likely turn up some cool stuff. Plus a chance to get free advice from flooring professionals.

Don't buy a carpet - think about how much of this is wasted money. Everything under the bed, for example, is never walked on or seen, same with anything under the wardrobes.

Although my bedroom is 12' x 12', the only carpet I can see & walk on amounts to a 2' strip either side of my bed & along the bottom. That is, 8' x 2', + 8' x 2' + 5' x 2' so all I really need to buy is a 6' piece. There are plenty of stores out there who are happy to sell remnants for a fraction of the usual price.

Alternatively, stain or varnish floorboards and chuck down a couple of plush rugs.

I have a friend who used brown paper bags to cover the floor. It was actually very pretty....it looks like leather! She collected a lot of brown paper shopping bags and ripped them into pieces approximately 12" square (no labels). When she had enough to cover the floor, plus some extras, she crumbled each of them up in a ball, then flattened them out again. Buy a gallon bottle of Elmer's glue. Using a dishpan and glue diluted with water, she soaked each piece in the glue, then layed it on the floor and smoothed it out with a wet sponge. Stagger and overlap your pieces so there are no long lines (Crazy quilt fashion). When you finish about a 3 SF area take some of the diluted glue and go over the covered area with another coat, making sure there are no big lumps. After the entire floor is covered allow to dry for a day or two, then paint on two good coats of floor polyurethane for shine and protection. The polyurethane will stand up to gentle damp mopping occassionally.
