Pruning landscape rose bushes

How soon can I prune my overgrown landscape roses? I don't want to kill them but they are way too large for the area where they are planted. They were already here when we moved in so I don't know how old they are. They bloom all summer with a ton of blooms on each plant. Thanks for any help you can give. Lesa
