Brown or black stain. Paint it on and wipe it off with a clean rag while still wet, then apply clear varnish.

I like to use Minwax Golden Pecan on Pallet wood...Sand and wipe on mixture of Vinegar and Steel Wool; leave outside for a few months to get wet and dried by sun. Lightly sand if there are any rough edges, wipe on Stain with a rag and wipe excess back off immediately...let dry, apply 2nd coat, wipe immediately, let dry...comes out a sweet golden brown...

I prefer using clear stain sometimes Walnut depending on the wood. I'd suggest applying a wood conditioner first, let dry thoroughly, brush on or wipe on the stain, remove excess with a rag. Let dry. Apply wipe on polyurethane to bring out the luster. The sheen is your choice.
