Dining room table - need ideas!

Was given a dinning room table, was going to refinish it, but sanded down a little to see what I was dealing with. Well some kind of compressed wood I never seen before. So I was thinking of painting it but not just a coat of paint, want to give it some character, or rustic look. So does anyone have a idea?
Thanks, John P in jersey

Could paint, let dry and put on a second color and sand off some spots and edges so the bottom colour shows through.

You could decoupage the top. Unfortunately, compressed wood never looks smooth with paint on it, after sanding, no matter how much you do.

do you have a photo of top and the view that shows the quality of the wood?

primer, then paint. i would go for an oil based paint. the water based paints may cause the raw area to swell., but test on a hidden area - like under the top- to see how the paint reacts to the wood. if okay, then paint rest of table. personally, i'd just throw a table cloth across it, use place mats or a clear vynal topper over the the table cloth.

Hi, didn't think of the oil base paint, thanks. Have table cloth on it now, but live in a large studio apartment, and the table cloth doesn't fit in. But thanks for the oil base idea, that should work, I'll let you know.
