I wouldn't use concrete. The area isn't level and you will have the issue of water runoff onto the driveway when it rains.

I would put a small border, about a foot high, along the sidewalk and driveway. Reseed with grass, make a garden or whatever else you want to do with that area.

Also, most dogs dislike the smell of citrus, chili pepper, mothballs, vinegar, ammonia and rubbing alcohol. You can sprinkle or spray fresh citrus juice, chili or cayenne pepper, moth balls or crystals along the perimeter the area. The later 3 will kill most vegetation so you might not want to use those.

I hope some of what I've written is useful. Good luck.

Gravel, a few drought tolerant shrubs and some stepping stones would look nice and be somewhat dog resistant.

I would give them an area to dig and plant the rest. Go so far as to fence their go-to area with inexpensive white fence and make sure they go there. They will train to be comfortable in that area. Also, you may want to even bury treasures in that area (desperate times) so they know they can dig there.

Thanks, we live on a farm so they have free range. We tried a short fence bUT they jumped it.

How about a rock garden. With the stones that are larger like 10" then put some plants in it that like crevices. The dogs will have a harder time digging. I had the same issue. The area will still allows drainage

They might work - I had rock and hostas planted there but they dig under the walkway there between our house and garage. The larger rock may do the job

Have you seen the pavers/cobblestones that allow grass/low groundcover to grow in and around the blocks? It looks very nice and for a small area shouldn't be too $$.. it's halfway between hardscape and a garden. It's very attractive as a whole driveway but that can be very expensive. Also, most groundcovers can even be driven on/walked on without much problem! That way if your car goes too far or if you're trying to make this patch look more level, nothing is damaged.

If they keep digging in that area, there might be moles, ground hogs, tunneling along the wall of the basement. Get rid of them and the dogs will leave it alone. Then put in plants that they don't like like a member of the mint family. Of course, then you have to worry about the mint spreading so I guess a row of small bushes that form a heavy root mass like lilac and put in gravel around the base of them.

Thank you - I believe they were after a mouse but it is constant. The mint is a good idea.

  • My dog use to dig holes all over the yard. Every time he dug a new hole I would fill it in and put his poop on top and put more dirt over the top.

Now he has only one hole he digs in and lays in it. No more holes all over the place.

Be careful with mint it is an invasive plant you plant a little and all of a sudden it has taken over completely.

You could do gravel or mulch and pop in drought tolerant plants and herbs. I've put in mint, rosemary and other plants that can take a beating from my dog.
