Can you help me with a storage solution?

My husband and I finally got rid of the bulky old cabinet that took up most of our dining space. Now we need cupboards to store all our seasonal dinner wares and our huge collection of plastic containers (half of which should probably be disposed). Any ideas on a neat, low-budget, and space-saving storage? Plywood? Aluminum? icon

  • Can you post a photo? Might help us assist you better. Do you have good thrift shops, second hand stores or a Goodwill to maybe pick up something second hand to make over? Or an Ikea or similar type store? Wood or aluminum is your choice, which would coordinate better with existing furnishings? How much space do you have to work with and how much stuff do you have to store?

Think outside the box. If you cannot find an old buffet piece, trying finding an old dresser and use the drawers to store your dishes. You could also try to find a two drawer vertical file cabinet. The drawers are deep and the perfect size for dishes and storage plastic. You can also paint the vertical file to match your wall to make it "disappear". Also, you can get pine board (at Home Depot) to make a top for the cabinet -- paint or stain or wax with Simoniz. If you are handy you can possibly make the top the length of the wall, put a rod across the whole length and make a curtain to cover the full length and height of the file and use the area on each side to hide items that won't fit into the lateral file drawers. Hope this is helpful.

i found an old pie safe that solved a lot of storage problems. a trip to a few antique or resale shops might give you some ideas if you look at them in a new way. I would definitely thin out the collection of plastic containets.

I like a sideboard for my Imari ware and crystal goblets that doubles as a serving table for a buffet .
