What is your location? What is the existing lawn type? What is your light situation?

What about a low growing groundcover, instead of grass. Garden centers sell some called "steppables" ,you can walk on. them. They have varieties that grow in full sun. I like creeping thyme, it flowers and smells very good, grows well in full sun.

Unfortunately due to the clay soil you will have to amend the soil before you can put grass seed down. Should you decide to take the task you will have to tilt the clay soil first, add ultra light top soil,Gypsum, and lime. It will take time for the clay to breakdown. Next step is to apply more top soil mixed with grass seed and starter fertilizer only. Keep well watered until your seed germinates.

Make a dog run for them. Then take them to a dog park for more energetic play.
