How do I go about Adding a Shower in our Tub?

I need to add a shower in my tub. There is tile about three feet up from the top of the tub, but nothing but wall above that. How do I prep/finish the wall and install a shower? Is this a DIY project or should I hire out? I recall in college using that "halo" type of contraption, but that never seemed totally functional or permanent (or attractive, for that matter).

Check your local regulations, it may require a permit. If you bypass a required permit and you want to sell the house you may be forced to remove it and repair the wall. Save yourself a headache by doing it right to begin with.

I am under the impression that you just want to add a shower to a tub where there is only a faucet. If you can't access the plumbing from the backside of the faucet, you will have to take out the wall over the tub. If you are handy doing plumbing it should be easy, but if not prep the wall and get it ready for the plumber to splice in. You can call a plumber (get references and check the BBB) to see what he would charge. If you do it, don't forget to shut off the water first and be sure to pressure check the new line before you close up the wall. If you are new at it I would leave the wall open for a day or two with pressure on it.

I'd go with a modern shower kit & the ceiling halo. They are so easy and elegant now and not that expensive as a DIY project. Good luck.
