Fabric drapes can help. Also, do you have a place for a celing fan? It makes a HUGE difference...
Not sure what direction your room faces, but you have several options. Mini blinds slightly closed, sheer curtains to block out some light but keeping it visually open, painting the ceiling the lightest pale blue ever....and of course, a ceiling fan or an oscillating fan. Keep furniture fabrics light, and use an area rug instead of wall to wall. Best of luck.
