Hi! well not sure what kind of chair you are covering but I did a seat cover for a small rocker.

Start at the front measure the length you will need and make a chain an inch or so longer than that length. (work from front to back). Now most chair seats taper down at the back so just continue your pattern and decrease down a little measuring as you go. When you have a piece that is just a bit bigger than the seat, do an edging that you can thread a strand of yarn through. You can make it simple or make it like a ruffle. Thread the yarn through the edging and pull it taut around the seat. You will have to make modifications at the back so that you can tie it to any upright parts of the chair back.

You can make the threading yarn stronger by making it a long chain, or use something like a ribbon if you like. You can also make it padded, just allow for the padding. I used cotton yarn.

These are pretty general instructions, and I am a bit in the make it up as you go along school of crochet, so good luck!

    Hi Joan,

Assuming you know the basics of crochet, you could just do something simple with single or double crochet. Look at your chair as a geometric object. Using paper on a roll, such as art paper, or even paper bags, make a pattern for each shape of the chair. Begin to crochet a shape for each pattern peace decreasing and increasing as needed. Once you have all of the pieces crocheted, pin them together on the chair and whipstitch them together at the seams. I once crocheted a chair cushion for someone out of state with just the dimensions of the cushion. It slipped easily over the seat and velcroed in the back. If you are a seasoned crocheter, you could add popcorn stitches or some other kind of dense stitch. I'd love to see it if you ever get it completed.

    Good luck to you!
