It takes quite a while for it to process, but here's how we do it:

Also just type "compost" in the search bar above and many posts will come up for other Hometalkers ideas on the subject. Good luck!

It depends on your climate and what you put in your pile. Some leaves take a while to compost, while fruit and vegetable peels, lawn clippings, and other light vegetable matter are a lot quicker. Don't include meat, bones, citrus or weeds (because the seeds will sprout wherever you use the compost). There are many instructions on composting, how to build bins, etc. but you can also just start a pile and keep adding. You'll need to keep a balance between green stuff (vegetable peelings, fresh clippings, and so on) and brown stuff ( leaves and dead vegetation) to keep it from smelling. Covering it loosely with a thick sheet of black plastic will speed things up. Turn your pile every so often and you'll have compost. I don't generate enough to have a proper compost pile, so I just dig holes in my beds, about the depth of my garden trowel, and add coffee grounds, egg shells, vegetable peelings and such, cover with dirt and repeat, until the hole is full, then start a new hole. Over time, this will greatly enrich your soil.
