Caulking

I have to recaulk around my bathtub. I have no idea how to do it. Does anyone know of a tutorial I can watch to see how it's done?

I don't have a video but when I caulk around anything, I put painters tape on the top and bottom of the area that needs caulking and put the caulk in between. Smooth it out with your finger and pull the tape upwards when you are done. Let dry 24 hours. And the lines will be straight! Hope you can understand this!
  • go to Youtube! That is the best place to go for videos. Caulking takes patience and short fingernails. LOL You have to remove the old caulking first and clean really well. It is not hard but can be messy for a beginner. Just remember to get a good silicone caulking for the bathroom that is mold and mildew resistant! good luck

funny you should post this today - just this morning on TV I saw where a guy had invented spray caulking - I was just telling hubby we should order that cuz my bathroom stool needs re-caulking - - but you might have to search as i did a Duh and didn't get the name of it - but if I find it before you i will send you the info - - - it is clear - so would be awesome if it truly works - do ya think? have a good one - Sandy Mae

You can use the search feature at the top of the page with the word, "caulk" and see various posts other HomeTalk members have done on this subject. Also here's one using the method I think @Debra Todd mentioned using painter's tape. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/-1311327

@Shari Thank you! I've already noticed how nice and helpful people are here. And there's so much information about things I haven't even thought of. I'm glad I found hometalk!

I redid our bathrooms years ago...hubby showed me how to do it. I don't have a tutorial, but I will say that when you get the old grout out, put on a mask and scrub the area with a little bleach...do not soak the area, but using a small brush (toothbrush works great) brush around between the tile and the tub/wall. Leave for 24 hours before regrouting. This cuts down on future mold! Good luck. P.S. Do not do this unless you are patient!

@Allison MacDougall I had a good giggle over your reply. "P" is not my strongest suit! As for wiping it down with alcohol...It certainly won't hurt, but I would wipe it with clorox too! Anything to keep mold from forming. Good luck! And they make better tools for evening out grout than they did when I did mine.

One of the most important things to do with a bathtub is to fill it partway with water prior to caulking. That way when you take a bath, the weight won't disturb your perfect caulk job by stretching it or pulling it off!

I agree w/ Cherie,TX! After removing old chalk, clean, dry. Fill the tub w/ water. Chalk and let completely set. That way it wont shrink or dislodge when taking a bath and causing leaks.
